William Hodge: Stitching Time in Mexico Saturday, June 18, 2011, 2:00pm An illustrated talk by William Hodge discussing how historical reference has always been a part of his regular artistic and teaching practices. Most recently he has been developing work based on his travels and studies of the indigenous textile traditions of Mexico. The talk will be illustrated with images and actual works from his collection.
John Willard: Quiltmaker Saturday, June 25, 2011, 2:00pm Come and learn about one man’s journey to becoming a master quiltmaker. John began with an interest in textiles in the 1960s and made his first quilt in 1975. Through slides and the examples in his trunk show you will discover John’s evolutionary approach to quilt making that will challenge and excite anyone working in textiles today. There will be time for plenty of questions during the trunk show. Be sure to order your tickets early. This presentation is sure to sell out!
Diane Gallinger: Hoop Dreams – The Rise and Fall of the Crinoline 1845 – 1912 Saturday, August 13, 2011, 2:00pm To many eyes, the lavish and gigantic gowns of the Victorian age seem impractical, ridiculous or romantic by turns. However, few styles in the history of fashion have so perfectly reflected the spirit of their times. Fashion in the Victorian and Edwardian periods reflected the values of society in general. The main themes of fashion - exaggerated size, the conquest of nature as seen in distorted, corseted body shapes and lavish materialistic display – neatly echoed the mindset that produced the great age of imperialism, Gilded Age robber barons and the wreck of the Titanic. What can fashion tell us about the mindset of a culture? Have we learned any lessons for today?
Judith Tinkl: Structure and Design Sunday, August 21, 2011, 2:00pm Everywhere in the world today there is an underlying structure. Textile artists use this structure, which reveals the language of pattern. I use it in my work. See how you can too. |
